Saturday, August 2nd: Lakes Region Household Hazardous Waste Collection.
Bring your hazardous waste to Center Ossipee’s Town Highway Garage from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Drain openers, paint thinners, motor oil, fuel, degreasers, pool chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, pesticides, photo chemicals, antifreeze and many more items and fluids are being accepted. Household products only, limited to 10 gallons or 50 pounds. Carpooling is encouraged, and proof of residency of participating towns only (you will be asked to present proof of residency). Ossipee Watershed towns participating: Effingham, Freedom, Ossipee, Sandwich and Tamworth.
Monday, August 4th: Freedom Town Forest & Trout Pond Hike.
Explore the town forest and learn from foresters about its natural history and recent timber harvesting and wildlife habitat improvement projects. Meet at the end of Shawtown Road, past Danforth Bay campground, at 9:30 a.m. Call Beth Earle 539-7357 FMI. Sponsored by Freedom Conservation Commission & Forest Advisory Committee. This hike is part of the Green Mountain Conservation Group’s “10 Hikes for 10 Years” series in 2008, sponsored by Sugar Hill Retirement Community. Please bring plenty of water, bug spray, snacks, and layers. We will be hiking until approximately 12:30 p.m., trail level is easy-moderate.
Thursday, August 7th: Green Mountain Hike.
Sponsored by GMCG (10 years/10 Hikes), and part of the Town of Freedom Old Home Week. Meet at the ball field at Freedom Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. Call John Shipman 539-5799 FMI. Please bring plenty of water, bug spray, snacks, and layers. We will be hiking the Dearborn Trail until approximately 12:30 p.m., trail level is moderate.
Monday, August 18th: Macroinvertebrate Sampling Training.
10-2 p.m. Huntress House, Effingham, N.H. Learn how to identify aquatic insects and other organisms that can be used as water quality indicators for the annual Volunteer Biological Assessment Program, a partnership between N.H. Department of Environmental Services and the Green Mountain Conservation Group. No experience necessary. Volunteers will participate in stream studies at multiple river sites in the towns of Effingham, Freedom, Madison, Ossipee, Sandwich and Tamworth. Call 539-1859 to register for the training.
Thursday, August 21st: Water Quality of Ossipee Lake & Tributaries.
The Green Mountain Conservation Group and N.H. Department of Environmental Services will present data and analysis from water testing of the Ossipee Lake system and surrounding rivers and streams. Data and reports to be presented include results from the Volunteer Lake Assessment Program (data from 1990 to present at a few sites), the Volunteer Biological Assessment Program (data from 2006 and 2007), and the Regional Interstate Volunteers for the Ecosystems and Rivers of the Saco and Ossipee Lake and Tributary programs (data from 2002 to present). 4:00 p.m. at Ossipee Town Hall.
